The ChallengeSeeking more visibility and accessibility for virtual learning

santo domingo, dominican republic

Unicaribe has offered virtual learning for nearly 28 years. However, with demand increasing, they began searching for a new way to deliver a better online learning experience for students and instructors alike. “The problem in the past was that when the teacher talked or when students talked, that was the only screen that you could see,” recalls José Alejandro Aybar M., President of the Board of Directors at Unicaribe. “So you didn’t have control over all the other participants in the classroom. If you’re not in contact with the students and if you don’t see their faces, you will not be able to allow and provide a quality education in the virtual learning style.”

And with sometimes limited internet accessibility across the Dominican Republic, the university needed to find a way to ensure students and staff could easily connect to their online learning environment from anywhere. “We had a lot of complaints from our students saying that the internet that is required to access their classes on was too heavy for some people who don’t have a very good internet connection,” shares José.

The SolutionUpgrading to Class for enhanced online education

With Blackboard Collaborate and Blackboard Learn already playing key roles in their EdTech ecosystem, Unicaribe was thrilled to discover that through Class’s 2022 acquisition of Collaborate, they had the unique opportunity to upgrade to Class. And because Class has a powerful, enhanced integration with Blackboard Learn, Unicaribe could continue to leverage the added benefits that come with integrated systems—including simplified instructional workflows, centralized content, and automatic data passback. Unicaribe realized that by upgrading from Collaborate to Class, they could take their online courses to the next level.

“After the demo presentation, it only took us 45 minutes to decide that we need to get Class. And just five weeks later, we went live with our students.”
José Alejandro Aybar M.,
President of the Board of Directors, Universidad del Caribe

“I’m always seeking what’s new in education so I can provide to our students,” begins José. “Once they showed me a demonstration, I was in love with it. Class is full of a lot of things that provide a completely different environment for the student. So it’s very user-friendly. The features that Class provides help the teacher. It’s like an assistant of the teacher that provides knowledge of if the student is participating, if the participation is good, if he’s paying attention to what is on the screen. And the statistics that Class has gives more information to the teacher to provide a good environment for our students.”

Seamless integration with Blackboard Learn

“In Class, our students have every single piece of information about their class and all the materials for their class. You don’t have to go sign-in in a different place. As soon as you sign-in with Blackboard, it’s like an ecosystem. You can go in Blackboard, click on Class, and it will go right there without asking for any other information. So it’s very comfortable for the students.”

“Class gave me a great service and provided a lot of confidence to us that they would be next to us during that switch. So it was a great feeling working with the technicians at Class, making that change; it was very nice and very smooth. We didn’t have any bad experiences or anything. It’s completely opposite; we are very happy that we made the change.”

“Now with Class, we have the teacher in the left corner and we have all the students on screen. So we have a lot more control of the quality of the education that we are providing. It is very comfortable to use Class because it gives us that view even when we record all the sessions; we can record everybody on the screen, not just the person who is talking.”

“Our students used to complain about the level of internet they needed to get into their courses. With Class it is much lighter the internet that they need. So it’s easier for anybody to connect even in the places that are far away from the cities where we have students. So that’s another incredible thing that Class provides us.”

The ResultDelivering better online learning to more students

By upgrading from Collaborate to Class, Unicaribe delivers a more effective and intuitive online learning experience to truly prepare students for successful lives. “After using the platform, students are very happy and they feel like more of a group and in a more friendly environment because they see everybody on screen in Class; they see the teacher on the left, they see the podium…So it’s a completely different feeling of the classroom. It’s like if you are in a physical classroom,” boasts José.

“I think every day more is needed to be flexible to the students and to teach them in the way that will fit better for their lives,” concludes José. “So by adding Class and enabling both virtual or hybrid options, it will give more possibilities to people with the complications that life can bring. They are able to perform and to graduate in different programs that can allow them to have a better life.”

With Class, Unicaribe is:

Creating a intuitive online learning experience

"I think it is a great opportunity for us as a higher education institution to provide the students with a platform like Class. If you want to be global as you have to be in these times, you have to provide students with platforms that they can trust, that they can feel comfortable with. And for us, having Blackboard, having Class and having other top platforms for higher education has been very powerful. We every day grow the number of international students enrolling."

Empowering teachers with more visibility

"The control that you have with everybody there is fantastic. You can have eyes on each student that is not paying attention, and watch the red tag become green. Also, the automatic registration of the student when they log in is great. And one of the most powerful things is the statistics that you get from Class. The statistics are very important for the teacher. It's like having an assistant that will provide information about each of the students. This is the only platform that I see that can provide as much information that Class does."

Connecting on-site and online students

"Class allows us to provide our students the possibility to be participating in a classroom physically, but also be connected with some virtual learners. And you can switch. If you have a class and you can go to the university that day and sit in the classroom, you can do it. But if you have in the next week a situation that complicates your going to the university, you can be virtual. So it brings both groups together in the classroom, virtual and physical classroom."

The ChallengeAddressing a need to engage virtual students more effectively

With eight different campuses, over 100,000 students, and more than 300 distinct degree pathways, Miami Dade College (MDC) is one of the largest and most diverse institutions in the United States. In order to accommodate the many MDC students balancing careers and raising families while pursuing their education, the institution used traditional video conferencing tools and other EdTech systems to develop online synchronous programs. Nevertheless, there were limitations with the tools used in effectively engaging learners or delivering the curriculum efficiently.

“Learner engagement is really important inside and outside of the classroom,” begins Mariah Schuemann, Instructional Designer at MDC. “If they’re not engaged, they’re sleeping, checking [their] phones, maybe cooking lunch—especially in the virtual spaces. So how do we keep students accountable in virtual spaces when it’s obviously more challenging than in in-person traditional classrooms?”

“Student engagement is a big deal at Miami Dade, and it’s also a big deal for me as a faculty member,” adds Dr. Allison Hudson, Assistant Professor at MDC. “And [engaging students] is sometimes a lot easier to do face-to-face. You can really establish that personal connection in a physical learning environment. But online, that was challenging. So one of our main challenges was how to fully replicate the in-class experience and bring that online.”

To truly drive learner engagement, MDC needed to find a new virtual learning solution that could deliver a better online learning experience that was intuitive and efficient for students and staff alike.

The SolutionCreating an exceptional online experience for students and teachers

After discovering that Class could seamlessly integrate with their existing Canvas LMS, MDC felt they’d found the right online learning tool to deliver a more intuitive education experience for students and instructors. And since Class has already been proven to increase online learner engagement, MDC knew they’d see an incredible impact on student participation as well.

“Before Class, using the technology that we had available, it was a juggling act between presenting content that was in the LMS and presenting content that was online and other content that perhaps was living on my device,” recalls Allison. “Class allows me to put all those resources into one place. It made the process seamless, and I think that adds to the student experience within the online learning environment. So it not only allows me to manage the course better, but it helps with engagement as well. Students say it’s easy to navigate, easy to learn, and allows them to participate in the classroom session because they have their resources right at their fingertips.”

“I’ve been working in online education for nearly a decade, and I’ve seen a lot of web conferencing tools,” adds Miguel Suarez, Senior LMS Support Analyst at MDC. “What I like most about Class is that it’s more student-focused and student-centered than any of the other web conferencing tools that I’ve seen integrated in other learning management systems. The integration of Class with our LMS has been a breeze mainly because of the attention by the folks at Class that we work with directly, the knowledge base that’s available to us through Class, and the low learning curve for those using the tool.”

“I got really good feedback from students saying that it was easy to navigate, easy to learn, and allows them to participate in the classroom session because they had their resources right at their fingertips.”

Unique opportunities to engage students

“I really appreciate the ability to monitor the pulse of engagement without students having to have their cameras on,” begins Mariah. “Because we all get video conferencing fatigue, and Class does a great job of providing opportunities for students who can’t have the camera on because of technological difficulties or interruptions. There are other ways for students to engage and show participation, such as polling or the collaborative whiteboard. By offering different types of engagement that quickly grabs their attention, there’s a little bit of accountability built into the platform itself, which keeps everybody on track.”

“For me, the most compelling feature in Class is the seamless integration into our Canvas LMS, or learning management system,” notes Miguel. “The LMS sync allows students to complete tasks, activities, or assessments right there in the Class user interface as soon as instructors provide the lecture or instruction. Before the integration, they would normally have to navigate to the learning management system to complete those items.”

“Students at times don’t feel seen. They may not be as eager to share an experience or answer a question or comment on a subject. But there are features in Class that allow a student to only share their camera with the instructor. That’s something that we thought was a game changer because it allows a student to feel comfortable and safe in that space,” celebrates Guillermo Ardon, Lead Academic Tech Technologist at MDC.

“In the virtual format, the process of taking attendance is usually cumbersome. I don’t have to worry about that anymore with Class [and Canvas],” shares Logan Saucer, Adjunct Faculty Member at MDC. “The student is automatically recognized as someone who is enrolled from my roster, which is updated on a regular basis through Canvas. So not only am I sure that the students there are the ones who are supposed to be there, but I’m also able to make sure from one class period to the next that I have an accurate attendance that doesn’t require any input on my part at all.”

The ResultIncreasing engagement, equity, & efficiency in a virtual environment

By integrating Class and Canvas, MDC was able to completely transform the online learning experience for both students and staff. “Before the Class platform was introduced into our ecosystem, it felt like we were talking to an empty room,” recalls Eduardo. “But thanks to Class, we can see the interactions and see students feel more natural in this remote environment. We can get them engaged in their education before they slip through the cracks.”

“What makes our online program unique in my opinion is taking the traditional classroom setting and bringing that into a virtual environment where the student is actually seen,” shares Guillermo. “I think that a lot of times students fall behind in a virtual classroom because they don’t feel present in front of the faculty or the instructor. With Class, we’ve created a safe place to interact, a safe place to engage in the conversation that is being held in the classroom. Class also empowers the instructor to feel as though they have more control and more features available to them that better enhance the classroom experience in general.”

With Class, Miami Dade College is:

Creating an in-person feel for students

“Student engagement is typically a lot easier to do face-to-face. You can really establish that personal connection in a physical learning environment. That was challenging for us online, but now Class allows me to engage students because I can identify students who aren’t participating and can encourage them to participate. I can call on them by name and ask them questions to get them engaged in the learning process. So that was a big win for us using Class,” says Allison.

Increasing equity and flexibility for students

"Equity and learning are tricky to navigate. We are trying to equalize the learning for everybody by providing a platform where if you can't make it to our campus, we'll take the campus to you. Now, students can choose from the best available courses no matter their schedules or location. Many students have to balance kids or careers, and we serve a large population of students who are 40 and up, who just want to reskill and don't have time to commute back and forth. Having this modality where you can interact both online and in-person helps us stand out as an institution," adds Eduardo.

Reallocating instructor time back to students

"One major benefit of using Class is the efficiency that it allows us as faculty. We essentially save time and that allows us to focus on our priority and our passion, which is teaching the student. I want to spend my time teaching the student; I don't want to spend my time learning the software or on updates or all the other things that you typically need to become a master of an EdTech tool. I just want to focus on teaching, and Class allows me to do that,” concludes Mariah.

The ChallengeEnsuring equitable access to education amid the teacher shortage

Classrooms for Colorado LIVE is an online pilot program designed to support districts across the Centennial state in need of highly-qualified math teachers, with the goal of minimizing the impact of the ongoing teacher shortage. In this unique learning model, students attend their brick-and-mortar school and a CC-LIVE instructor logs on to teach the curriculum remotely while a “classroom supporter”—a member of the school’s educational community—oversees the in-person student experience, ensuring a smooth class period with maximized learning time and prompt attention to safety, technical, and social-emotional needs.

“We are bringing live, virtual teachers to in-person classrooms all over the state of Colorado to make sure students are getting the highest quality teacher possible,” explains Roxie Mitchell, Developer and Coordinator of CC-LIVE. “All across the country we have a teacher shortage,” adds Nicolette DiPietro, Program Researcher. “Our pilot is focused on solving the teacher vacancy issue.”

To ensure the success of this modern approach to education, CC-LIVE needed to find an online learning solution that could help them seamlessly facilitate sessions and realize their vision of getting incredible teachers in front of students in districts struggling to hire.

The SolutionConnecting students in a classroom to high-quality teachers online

Once CC-LIVE discovered Class’s virtual classroom, they knew they’d found the right partner to help them combat the teacher shortage and design a better way to connect students on campus with qualified teachers across the state.

“Class offers some modern working conditions for our teachers to live in the communities and places they want to, but be able to teach students anywhere in the state,” shares Roxie. “It also gives students equitable access to education. So just because they live perhaps in a rural area or somewhere they can’t get a teacher, this allows the students to be able to get a really highly qualified math teacher in their classroom when they need it.”

“Class supports the teacher by giving them the tools necessary to best direct their students from anywhere,” adds Nicolette.

“We don’t have teachers living in the communities where teachers are needed…Classrooms for Colorado LIVE—using Class for digital delivery of a teacher—helps schools start to think about their applicant pool not just being in their community.”

Individual and group chat feature

“Sometimes students are afraid to say their question out loud. So Class allows another option for communication between students and teachers during class time,” shares Nicolette. “We all don’t want to communicate in the same way, so Class allows us to do that.”

“We work with so many unique schools. But having one platform that works well with all the schools and their LMSs allows a little bit of consistency for our teachers also. It’s nice to have a platform that we can fully support and our teachers don’t have to flip from one platform to another. It’s consistent for the students and the teachers too,” explains Nicolette.

“I think the proctor view is also fantastic. Our teachers, again, are not physically in the classroom. So to have their eyes on the screens, like they’re walking around in the back of the classroom with that proctor view is great. Or having a student be able to share their work and their window with the teacher to problem solve something,” says Roxie.

“Being on the research side of things, I like to be able to see and analyze and quantify a lot of those pieces that are featured in the dashboard. So knowing how often someone raises their hand or they use the different reactions gives us a little bit of insight on the other end of what’s going on in these classrooms,” notes Nicolette.

The ResultDelivering a more equitable learning experience for all learners

By entrusting Class to facilitate their unique learning program, CC-LIVE is able to support districts and students across the entire state of Colorado in need of high-quality teachers. Choosing a flexible solution like Class empowered CC-LIVE to provide a more equitable learning experience for students while addressing the nationwide teacher shortage.

“There are so many variables within the CC-LIVE model, and having Class as our platform really makes us adaptable,” shares Nicollete. “You could take one of our teachers, and they could be in five different communities throughout the state of Colorado in a day. And students get to stay in their school structure. They’re still next to their friends, chatting and having a good time, so we’re able to make sure that they still get that social and emotional support.”

“Some of the tools in Class really open up a new way for learning for some students that they had not experienced in their other in-person classes,” concludes Roxie. “So we want to give students an opportunity to experience those things, reflect on those things, and use that knowledge to think forward about their education.”

With Class, CC-Live is:

Putting high-quality teachers in front of more students

“One district just couldn’t find a math teacher no matter what they were offering. That’s over 100 students that would not be able to have a live math teacher right now. We can provide not just any math teacher, but a qualified math teacher,” shares Nicolette.

Increasing learning opportunities for students

“There were some advanced students that wanted to continue moving forward and moving on. But the school didn’t have the budget for a math teacher. With CC-Live coming in and working with this school, these students can now continue learning with a highly-qualified teacher,” notes Nicolette.

Enhancing their model to meet students’ unique needs

“Class is helping us expand our group of math teachers as well as expand the courses that we offer, so we can impact more students all across the state. We work with a variety of different schools. It’s really neat to see how this model can adapt to the different types of learners, and not just from one community to another, but within that same classroom. We’re differentiating the teaching and the learning,” says Nicolette.

The ChallengeEngaging remote learners in a virtual setting

Premier America Credit Union is a financial institution that offers full-service, state-of-the-art banking services. They provide training to their contact center employees on how to best support their member-owners. Amid COVID that in-person training shifted to a virtual setting, but their video conferencing tools weren’t delivering an engaging learning experience. “There’s lots of tools out there that facilitate meetings, but they’re not really great tools when it comes to conducting training or keeping attendees accountable,” says Shelley Tam, SVP Chief People Officer.

Premier America realized they needed a better virtual training tool that could be flexible to their new hybrid environment, replicate the on-site learning experience, and encourage employees to engage with the content. “We needed to find a solution that embodied what the instructor-led, in-person experience had,” recalls Chris Richter, the company’s Manager of Organizational Development.

The SolutionBridging the gap between video conferencing and in-person

After discovering Class, Chris knew she’d found the right online learning tool to deliver a more engaging learning experience for instructors and employees. “We realized that Class was the solution for us because it really imitated how it would be in an instructor-led environment in the credit union industry,” says Chris. “There’s a lot of hands-on training with the different types of systems, lending systems, deposit systems. So it really mirrored that. What we really enjoyed was the ability to see the facilitator in a single spot, as well as the ability to invite other presenters. That mirrored their ability to be in front of the participants as well. Additionally, just having that ability to see everyone in those breakout sessions is also critical. Being able to drop in and pop in on those conversations as if I were with them in the same room was excellent.”

“If you are considering teaching in Class, go for it,” encourages Evelyn Montes, Talent Development Specialist. “It’s a very easy platform. There are so many ways to keep your participants engaged. We have a range of team members. Some have been with us for 20 years, and some who’ve been with us for months. They seem to all really enjoy Class.”

“Class has allowed Premier America to join the modern age of technology by providing learning opportunities remotely, which is a big win for us. We’re very excited that we’re continually using Class and that it will be in our future.”
Robyn Bilauca , Manager of Talent Development, Premier America Credit Union
Flexible breakout rooms

“Just having the ability to see everyone in those breakout sessions is also critical. Being able to drop in and pop in on those conversations as if I were with them in the same room was excellent,” shares Chris.

“I started using the polls, but I actually started using it a little bit different than a poll question. I actually kind of used it as a quiz. So I created ten poll questions that I launched and then give them a chance to provide the answers. So that’s how I’ve been using the polls. They’re fun, easy to create, and the participants enjoy them,” says Evelyn.

“By creating a Class template, you can upload the template to a new session, for example, a different date and time, and be able to apply that template and all the information automatically populates, which includes maybe a participant guide, maybe you’re using quizzes and tests that you use on a regular basis. You can also edit any documents that you’ve uploaded using that template as well, which gives you some flexibility. So from a training perspective and managing your courses, it’s nice to be able to set up all the training at one time,” shares Robyn.

“Within the chat feature, when you break them out into a session, you can actually talk to each of the groups individually or post as a whole. So it’s great because if they’ve got a question or concern, you can chat right there with them. Maybe you’re in a session, or maybe you’re just monitoring the chats as the time goes on,” notes Robyn.

The ResultSupporting the whole employee to increase retention

By adding Class to their technology stack, Premier America can deliver a more engaging virtual learning experience that supports the whole employee, improves the quality of their courses, and positions the overall business as an employer of choice.

“Using the Class virtual tool has really opened some doors for us as far as team member engagement is concerned,” explains Chris. “That is a top priority for Premier America as our goal of being an employer of choice, so using tools like Class where it allows team members to easily replicate in-person experiences will be the key to a consistent member experience and team member experience moving forward.”

“The training team really enjoys using Class,” adds Robyn. “I think as a whole, it makes the remote learning easier. They have tools and resources where it naturally engages the learner.”

“Class not only allows our trainers to be more effective at delivering the content, but it also holds our attendees accountable for actually participating. And that has been kind of a missing piece of our training,” concludes Shelley. “Our team members have really embraced being able to be trained remotely because they appreciate the fact that they don’t have to sit in traffic, and it helps them with scheduling for childcare. They just really appreciate that flexibility and the fact that we’ve considered their needs, which is beyond a work need. As part of our goal of being an employer of choice, we want to make sure that we focus on our team members, the whole team member, not just the person in front of me today and the work that they’re going to do for me, but also what makes up that particular team member. Their families, their circumstances, where they live. So the more flexibility that we can provide for our team members, I believe that that’s again a differentiator for us in creating an employer of choice and will lead to long-term retention.”

With Class, Premier America is:

Increasing long-term retention

“Our differentiator is our people and the service that they provide to our members. So some roles do need to be on-site and in-person. But for those that don’t, being able to offer that flexibility allows your team members to be engaged in their work. Also it allows for long-term retention as well. It makes us more competitive and, anything that makes us more competitive, I will embrace that wholeheartedly,” shares Shelley.

Expanding learning opportunities

“It’s allowed us to explore more content, more topics that we may not have been able to provide in the past that we can in the future. So we’re working on leadership courses. And some of the vendors we use and the content they have, Class makes it much easier to deliver those courses based on the setup and level of engagement that we can get from our leaders. And so just that ease and using the application, I think will provide us an opportunity for more courses in the future, more learning opportunities,” boasts Robyn.

Becoming an employer of choice

“As a credit union, we compete with the big banks. So we feel like we need a very compelling proposition for our team members to actively choose us and work for us here and not even for just the short term, really being here on the long term to invest their careers with us and really grow the Premier America brand alongside us. The flexibility of Class has truly positioned us as an employer of choice,” says Shelley.

The ChallengeStruggling with inefficient online proctoring

Before the pandemic, Austin Community College District offered a few online programs but most courses were still in a face-to-face format. After being forced to go fully remote amid lockdowns, ACC realized they needed better virtual learning tools to help them truly replicate the synchronous in-person experience and efficiently proctor assessments for their 40,000 students.

“Our proctoring services were effective, but not very efficient,” recalls Zuleyka Izquierdo, Distance Education Testing Manager at ACC. “Based on the platforms that we had available to us, we were only able to do one-on-one testing. As our program grew, that was no longer sustainable. For every one appointment we had, we had about 10 students fighting for that one appointment.”

“We experimented with other tools, but many of the tools that we found only allow you to be able to do one-to-one proctoring with one student sharing their screen at a time,” adds Dr. Erasmus Addae, Associate Vice Chancellor for Distance Education at ACC. “We needed to be able to do one-to-many proctoring.”

The SolutionAdopting a virtual learning tool to improve and scale proctoring

By switching to Class’s next generation virtual classroom, ACC was able to scale their proctoring services and create a more real-life test-taking experience.

“Our faculty wanted multiple students to share their screens at the same time when they are taking tests, so we can determine what they’re doing at the time of taking the test. It provides some form of security,” explains Dr. Addae. “So we were excited when we chanced upon Class, and Class has allowed us to do that. Currently, I believe we offer one proctor to 15 students at a time, which is much more scaled out from what we used to do.”

“Once we switched to Class, it completely changed the way we were able to offer our proctoring services,” says Zuleyka. “We’re now able to offer group proctoring sessions. And Class allows us to see all the students as well as see their screens, which really helps us with upholding testing integrity.”

“If you are looking for a tool that allows faculty to be able to manage their classroom effectively and in real time, Class is a tool you should consider.”
Dr. Erasmus Addae, Associate Vice Chancellor for Distance Education, Austin Community College
Flexible, scalable proctor view

“Many tools only allow one-to-one proctoring, but we were also looking for something that gave us a capability to be able to do one-to-many proctoring. Class allowed us to scale to 1:15 proctoring,” shares Dr. Addae.

“One of the functionalities that I really like about Class is the ability to deploy learning tools in real time. For example, the faculty member can deploy quizzes and assignments in real time, and then also have the ability to proctor the students in real time,” says Dr. Addae.

“The Class team quickly developed training documents and guides that we could provide to the students as well as to the proctors. Very easy, very simple to follow anytime I had any issues that even weren’t quite related to technical support,” recalls Zuleyka.

“Class helps us with classroom management. If a student was disengaged in the virtual synchronous space, there was no way for the faculty to know what the students were doing. But Class allows us to re-engage the student so they’re brought back to their classroom,” notes Dr. Addae.

The ResultDriving efficiency and equity in an online learning environment

By transitioning their proctoring services to Class, ACC has saved over $500,000. Class has empowered staff with a more efficient classroom management tool and students with a more flexible exam experience, which ensures test integrity and lasting comprehension.

“Being able to use Class for proctoring has given the faculty more time in the classroom to teach, which is actually beneficial to the student. This gives them more time to learn the information that they need to be successful in the course. It also allows them to schedule their exams at their convenience and at a convenient location for themselves, which really helps reduce test anxiety for them. Therefore, making them more successful in the end,” notes Zuleyka.

“We are in the business of providing education,” concludes Dr. Addae. “We are in the business of training people and giving them skills so they can find the jobs of tomorrow and today. Class has helped us adapt, stay nimble, and deliver a more effective online environment for staff and a more equitable education for our students.”

With Class, ACC:

Saved $500K on proctoring costs

“By eliminating our third-party proctoring and bringing it in-house with Class, we’ve saved $500,000. Now, we can reallocate those funds towards supporting our financially disadvantaged students,” says Dr. Addae.

Provides more secure, effective proctoring

“Class allows us to see the student and their screens, which helps us uphold testing integrity. We’re able to communicate with them privately. The students also have privacy where they cannot see each other. Overall, it just really increased the effectiveness of our ability to proctor,” boasts Zuleyka.

Expanded virtual proctoring program

“Class has allowed us to offer our services beyond just asynchronous online courses. Now, we’re able to offer our services to the hybrid courses as well. And in the future, I’m hoping that we can incorporate all of the distance learning platforms,” says Zuleyka.

The ChallengeFinding the right tool to enhance virtual learning

After a rocky online learning experience during the pandemic, Calcasieu Parish School Board realized they needed to rethink the virtual classroom. “We felt like we still needed to be prepared for some type of virtual opportunity for our students,” begins Dr. Doug DeVillier, Virtual Program Director at Calcasieu. “But we’ve also had some issues in the past with teacher shortages, accreditations, credentials of teachers, being able to really maximize our staff. So our virtual instruction program was created really to solve the problem of the teacher shortage and trying to find a smarter way to use the staff we had,” recalls Doug. With their end goals in mind, Calcasieu designed a unique virtual instruction program (VIP) that flipped the idea of online learning on its head.

“When you say ‘virtual’, people think the students are home. They think maybe the teachers are at home, but that’s not the case [at Calcasieu],” explains Doug. “The students are actually on their campus, but they’re not virtual all day long. And that’s really the game changer. They are face-to-face their entire day. But if they want to take a particular virtual class, which we offer through the virtual instruction program, they go into a special computer lab, and in that lab, they log in. Live time, live instruction. When they log in, their teacher logs in, and they are actually having a conversation with their teachers. And our teachers are located here with me in one school building.” With this new approach to online learning in place, Calcasieu needed to find an innovative virtual classroom that could support their VIP and deliver an engaging and valuable virtual learning experience that would truly connect students and teachers.

The SolutionMaking virtual feel like face-to-face

After discovering Class, Calcasieu knew they’d found the right online learning tool to support their newly-designed virtual program. With high schoolers from all across the district logging on to Calcasieu’s VIP, Class has connected students and teachers through an enriching virtual experience that still focuses on live, face-to-face learning. “Class has definitely helped us build relationships with students in the sense that we still see the kids’ faces every day,” begins Samantha Jacobson, Math Teacher at Calcasieu. “We log on, and we talk to them live every day. I can still read their facial expressions. I can still talk to them one-on-one.”

“Even though the students are across the district from each other, it’s been really fascinating to see them build relationships,” adds Hannah Hebert, another Calcasieu Math Teacher. “We’ve had students say, ‘I’ve made friends with people that I might not have met otherwise at my school, but I have a lot in common with’. And because of a program like Class, they’re able to see each other and interact with each other and build those relationships. So that’s been really fascinating to see.”

“Anyone that’s thinking about doing anything like this in a virtual setting, you’ve got to have people in place, you’ve got to have key players that are going to support you. And we were very lucky to have that partnership with Class.”
Dr. Doug DeVillier, Virtual Program Director, Calcasieu Parish School Board
Breakout rooms for 1:1 conversations

“If a student sent us a private message in Class, like, ‘Hey, I need help with this problem,’ we can initiate a one-on-one breakout room so we can talk to them—just them and not the rest of the class. We can replicate those moments in the face-to-face classroom where you would pull a student to the side and help them out using the one-on-one breakout room,” says Hannah.

“We wanted to build a classroom environment where students felt comfortable to type into the chat. But we know that we had to set the procedure, that they had to be respectful in the chat. So sometimes we will take away the chat feature. We love that we can decide on whether they can message everyone. They can message just us. They can’t message anyone at all. I love being able to control who they are allowed to message,” notes Samantha.

“In the [in-person] face-to-face classroom, you can walk around and see the students work. And Proctor View gives us a way to do that. If they’re having trouble with a problem, we can go into Proctor View, see their screen, and catch any mistakes. We use Excel a lot in our class for statistics. We can see if there’s a typo in the formula, if they aren’t clicking on the right cell, etc. So Proctor View allows us to see the student screen so we can catch those mistakes and help them out,” explains Hannah.

“The podium is where the main teacher is at the top corner [of the screen], and they stay there. And we like to put students on the podium for different things like birthdays, if they’re dressed up for Homecoming Week, or when they answer questions. We also use it for student presentations, so that way all the students can see the presenter’s face and give them their undivided attention,” shares Samantha.

The ResultPreparing students for college and beyond

By adding Class to their edtech stack, Calcasieu delivered an engaging virtual instruction program that helps connect students and teachers, improve learning outcomes, and prepare students for the next step in their futures. The state of Louisiana even recognized the success of the VIP and awarded Calcasieu with a Model of Excellence—inspiring two more schools within the district to join the virtual program in the coming year.

“Now that I’m confident in the basics of Class, I can spend time learning new features,” says Samantha. “I’m super excited to bring in new schools and that new students will have the opportunity to take our classes.”

“The benefit for our students with live instruction through the virtual program is they still get the experience of having an instructor that they feel like they’re connected to,” concludes Doug. “They feel like they’re connected to a real classroom, and we can offer more college credit courses to more students.”

With Class, Calcasieu Parish School Board is:

Expanding access to more learners

“Two more schools are joining the VIP this year. So I’m excited to be able to reach even more students than we were last year, especially now that we’re familiar with how Class works and all the features that we could use,” shares Hannah.

Combating the teacher shortage

“We don’t have 11 teachers certified to teach physics, but our virtual program lets us leverage our staff where we have that certified physics teacher so all 11 high schools get to experience that and earn college credit,” shares Doug.

Earning the Model of Excellence award

“Louisiana recognized our district with a Model of Excellence award for our virtual instruction program, which is very innovative for our state,” says Doug.

The ChallengeConnecting remote and in-office learners

Schoox offers workplace learning software designed to keep learners curious and support career development from wherever work happens. With employees across the globe—working from both office locations and remotely—Schoox’s own Learning & Development team wanted to create a more engaging learning experience for their employees. As experts in learning technology, they needed a scalable solution to ensure their dispersed staff could develop new skills from anywhere while reducing the administrative burden that comes with a virtual training setup.

“We were looking for a tool to take us virtual,” begins Karen Clem, Senior Director of Talent Development at Schoox. “I wondered ‘What’s going to create an experience where people feel connected? How can we create learning experiences that aren’t one-size-fits-all?’ I was looking for something that could be individual for every learning need and create a connection so learning can truly happen.”

The SolutionEnsuring an engaging blended learning environment

After discovering Class, Karen knew she’d found the right online learning tool to deliver a more engaging learning experience for all Schoox employees. “We want to provide resources that allow our employees to seek out things that are going to fulfill, not just what’s going to help in their regular day job. We want people to chase their passions, be curious, and pursue excellence. As soon as I saw Class, I knew it could deliver the type of learning experience we’re looking for at Schoox.”

“It was hard sometimes to tell if our learners were engaged, so we really wanted to find a tool that could help us see if our learners were engaged,” explains Amy Drozd, Leadership Development Program Manager at Schoox. “With Class, we can see if people are engaged not just in our courses but also through dashboards and data.”

“Imagine your standard web conferencing tool. Now imagine it like it’s 2.0…Class is taking the virtual learning environment to another level that you can’t do with just your regular meeting tools.”
Karen Clem, Senior Director of Talent Development, Schoox
Engaging breakout rooms

“These aren’t just regular breakout rooms. I can see what’s happening. I can tell when people are talking. And I get such a better overview of the different activities. I can do so much more than with (video conferencing tools),” shares Karen.

“Templates have saved at least half an hour of prep time per class because I can have everything ready in about 5 minutes with Class,” says Karen.

“I love having the surveys appear right after and making sure they do it in Class. Previously, we’d send surveys but wouldn’t get that feedback because people don’t want to spend the time or they’d forget to do it. Now we get timely feedback that helps us constantly evolve our training,” notes Karen.

“We’re always trying to be innovative to make sure we provide the best tool for our customers. And I think that Class does the same thing really well. [They’re] constantly asking for our feedback, what features we would like to see, and what we could work on,” notes Amy.

The ResultIncreasing employee engagement from anywhere

By adding Class to their technology stack, Schoox can deliver a more engaging blended learning experience that supports all types of learners, improves the quality of their L&D programs, and supports a healthier business overall.

“Class really supports all of our learners wherever they are,” says Amy. “It helps us serve our entire diverse population, and it supports our innovative culture by allowing us to provide the best tool for our customers. We’re growing a lot as a company, and Class empowers us to offer more courses to more people, so our L&D program can scale alongside the business.”

“People are able to truly connect,” concludes Karen. “At our leadership bootcamp, people said, ‘I’m able to create more connections because we can create experiences in a different way.’ The ability to meet learners where they are, meet our diverse needs in diverse ways—that supports who Schoox is as a culture. We’re able to create just so many better experiences through Class.”

With Class, Schoox is:

Creating deeper connections

“The difference between Class and other platforms is really the way learners are able to connect and the way facilitators can stay connected to what’s going on,” shares Amy.

Improving consistency in L&D programs

“Class Templates help us create consistency for our learners. We know that if I’m not available to teach that session that day, someone else can step in and our learners are going to get the same experience,” boasts Amy.

Achieving immediate ROI

“Class empowers learning from anywhere at any time. We shifted courses for salespeople to the start of a quarter so they can focus on closing new deals at the end of the quarter. We have that flexibility now. The business is able to save a lot of money from that,” says Karen.

The ChallengeEnsuring equitable access for all students

The Centre for Higher Education Studies (CHES) is a new center of excellence designed to improve educational outcomes for high-ability students across Victoria, Australia, through accelerated programs for senior students from government secondary schools. Serving both online and on-site students, CHES wanted to give all learners equitable access to an engaging classroom experience. They needed a way to ensure their dispersed student population could continue their education from anywhere and build strong peer-to-peer relationships.

“Using a video conferencing software just wasn’t the answer for us. You can’t read the room,” says Sapphira Talbot-Strettle, Learning Specialist at CHES. “So when I took this role, I wanted to ensure that the learning experience for the students online could replicate the experience of being in the classroom as much as possible. Not being passive, not the blank screens. I had this idea of being able to really bring them into the classroom and create a connection.”

The SolutionCreating an effective, hybrid learning environment

Image provided by CHES

After discovering Class, Sapphira knew she’d found the right online learning tool to deliver a more equitable education experience for on-site and online students at CHES. “What attracted me to Class is that it’s designed as a teaching tool, not just a generic tool that teachers could use,” recalls Sapphira. “The layout and the functionality empowered me to teach in a way that I hadn’t been able to teach before.”

“The key thing about any technology for education is it’s about how it allows for greater access and how it allows us as teachers to deliver our programs in an optimum way,” continues Sapphira. “At CHES, we want the learning experience to be enhanced for all students, and for teachers to have confidence that the right software can enhance what we can teach and to whom we can teach. Class enables every child to matter regardless of where they’re living, reduces the unfortunate inequity that exists, and gives access to everyone.”

“It’s a mix that works for students because even students that live closer to CHES, to our facility, are able to join online at times where it works in terms of their overall circumstances,” says Stewart Milner, Foundation Principal at CHES. “They really do comment that this is an experience of online learning that’s worked for them, that’s been much more interactive.”

“Students are saying that Class has been the best experience they’ve had of online or hybrid learning. And our staff can benefit from Class too because it gives them the flexibility to teach or participate in professional development from anywhere.”
Stuart Milner, Foundation Principal, Centre for Higher Education Studies
Engaging breakout rooms

“Previously we’d have to navigate between individual breakout rooms. With Class, you’re actually able to oversee and interact with all of the breakout rooms immediately. We’re also purposeful to mix on-site and online students in each of our breakout rooms,” shares Sapphira.

“The proctor view is incredibly useful for when students want to share screens with you, so you can see how they’re getting on. It can be used for assessments, but it also can just be used for reviewing work and promoting discussions. It’s a fantastic double feature!” explains Sapphira.

class gallery view showing k-12 learners

“Using the gallery, I can see students’ faces and speak to them, and they can speak to the class. The fact that they can actually see what’s going on and interact with their online and on-site classmates live is what really makes Class different and engaging,” says Sapphira.

“The support that Class provides gives me confidence in not only how Class is now, but how I know it’s going to be in the future as well. As the hybrid world and tech are evolving, so is Class. Class listens to teachers and understands our particular needs,” notes Sapphira.

The ResultPreparing students for their futures

By adding Class to their technology stack, CHES delivers a more equitable, accessible, and engaging hybrid learning experience that ultimately prepares both on-site and online students for their professional futures in a hybrid world. “The main benefit of Class for us is that it gives students in the classroom and students online an experience that’s almost as if they were there in the room together,” says Stewart. “And that’s what we’re really pleased about: they have that flexibility, and it doesn’t matter whether they’re online or on site. They’re learning how to communicate and collaborate in a hybrid model now, which will help them in their futures.”

“The pandemic showed that isolation is actually a real issue and that meaningful interaction is what’s important for student success,” adds Sapphira. “Using Class for interactive lessons and HyFlex learning means that our students get to know each other quickly, interact together, and form a bond really quickly. That enhances their learning of their subject and gives them confidence going into university courses, into the workforce, and in interacting in the wider world,” concludes Sapphira.

With Class, CHES is:

Creating an interactive learning experience

“Class delivers greater control of the learning experience, so we can create a seamless, engaging experience for students and in many ways for teachers,” shares Stewart.

Simplifying hybrid learning for staff

“Class has simplified the process for our teaching staff in terms of managing their in-person and remote students. Now, staff can use this technology to improve how they teach, from anywhere,” boasts Stewart.

Empowering students to thrive

“Class empowers on-site and online students to be seen, heard, and much more engaged. It’s allowed for a smoother, more sophisticated experience of teaching and learning,” says Stewart.

Gavin Harper, Director of Online, eLearning Services & CBE, Salt Lake Community College

As the only community college in Utah, Salt Lake Community College serves students from all kinds of backgrounds. “Our students are generally single mothers, veterans, students who are first time, or first generation college students who are coming to our online courses because they know SLCC reflects who they are. Our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion at SLCC is because of the student populations who attend here. It’s part of our mission and values,” says Gavin Harper, Director of Online, eLearning Services & CBE at SLCC.

To support their diverse student population through the pandemic, SLCC needed to find an online learning tool that could help them continue their education remotely.

The SolutionAdopting an equitable online learning experience

SLCC switched to Class during the pandemic, but chose to stay with Class once they realized how valuable and equitable the online learning tool was for their students. “Right after the pandemic, we all expected this modality to go away and no longer be supported. But our students were still signing up for these online synchronous courses first. So we recognized that we really needed to continue this for them,” shares Gavin. “We might have stumbled into it during the pandemic, but based on registration, our students were really telling us, ‘Please make sure that Class doesn’t go away’.” Corey Stevens, Assistant Director of Teaching and Learning Technology, adds, “we have a lot of people who are really excited about this!”

Ethical accessibility standards

After a thorough Accessibility Review, SLCC found Class to be an excellent fit for their diverse student population.

SLCC conducted a Technology Review and determined Class’s tech infrastructure to be secure and compliant, leading to an easier adoption.

With Class, SLCC students can still connect and interact with their peers and professors as they would in an on-campus course.

Class’s online synchronous learning environment empowers SLCC students to balance their education and personal responsibilities.

The ResultEnsuring equity in an online environment

By adding Class to their existing web conferencing software, SLCC delivers a more equitable, accessible, and successful online learning experience for a staff distributed across 10 campuses and the most diverse student population in the state.

“I think we’re having such high adoption rates because we took the change management very seriously,” shares Stevens. “It’s an almost formulaic process where we plan on how to communicate and build FAQs, how-to articles, and knowledge base articles. I think our careful implementation has set ourselves up well to affect positive change and foster excitement about Class.”

“And what’s really important to us is we’re advocating for a positive experience for our students,” adds Gavin. “So Corey and I would not be doing all this work [to rollout Class] if we didn’t recognize that this was something that students were benefiting from as well. I hope other people can see the value of Class for their students and institution too.”

With Class, SLCC is:

Improving accessibility for students

“Online synchronous courses really offer accessibility and equity of experience. We can educate more students better because we have tools like Class to make that education better for them. So really it’s an important part of the toolbox in all of the different modalities that we have,” shares Corey.

Increasing staff adoption with effective training

“An incredible milestone was when I overheard one faculty member convincing another to use Class. Word of mouth was happening between different faculty. It wasn’t just an announcement or an email from me. It was their department meetings and water cooler conversations that got them here,” boasts Corey.

Named one of the best online institutions

“This year, we were ranked in Newsweek as one of the best online institutions in the country, and we take that responsibility very seriously. There were only two other Utah institutions on that list. So when my team is building online courses, the technology that we choose reflects that kind of quality at the same time,” says Gavin.
